Begin With One Heirloom
Shannon HowardThe Seven Heirloom Letters
The Stories We Keep. The Love We Pass Along.
Some things are simply too special to leave without a story.
Grandmother’s lace shawl. A grandfather’s pocket watch. The silver serving spoon that has been passed around the holiday table for generations. A wedding handkerchief, a handwritten recipe, or a little treasure tucked away in a drawer.
We know these things are special. We may even know who owned them.
But do we know the whole story?
Who wore the cameo necklace to her wedding? Why was the pocket watch so important to Grandfather? Who first brought that serving spoon into the family? And what would the person who treasured it most want the next generation to know?
At Dear & Always, we believe every heirloom deserves more than a place in a cabinet or a box in the attic.
It deserves its story.
And perhaps, even more importantly, a letter.
An Heirloom Is More Than an Object
An heirloom carries something we cannot always see.
It holds memories, family traditions, and little pieces of the people who came before us. Sometimes we know its history by heart. Other times, the details have become a little fuzzy over the years.
The Seven Heirloom Letters was created to help families preserve those stories while there is still someone who can tell them.
It is a thoughtful archival system that invites you to document an heirloom’s history, share its meaning, and write a personal letter to the next Keeper of the Heirloom.
Because the next person who receives it should know more than what it is.
They should know why it matters.
Introducing the Seven Heirloom Letters
The Seven Heirloom Letters is a keepsake letter-writing experience designed to help you preserve the history and meaning of a treasured family heirloom.
Each collection provides the pieces you need to record its story, write a letter to the next keeper, and attach a lasting archival tag directly to the heirloom.
The experience includes:
The Cover Page
A beautiful introduction to your heirloom, identifying the treasured object and the family or individual connected to its story.
The Story Page
A place to document the heirloom’s history. Record who owned it, where it came from, the memories surrounding it, and the reasons it has been treasured through the years.
The Letter Page
This is where the heart of the experience begins.
Write a personal letter to the next Keeper of the Heirloom. Share what the object means to you, the memories you hope will live on, and the wishes or words of encouragement you want to pass along.
The Archival Tag
A coordinating tag designed to attach to the heirloom itself, connecting the treasured object to its written history.
Each piece works together to create a meaningful record that can be preserved, revisited, and passed along with the heirloom.
How It Works
You don't need to be a family historian or a professional writer to begin. You simply need an heirloom and a little time to remember.
1. Choose Your Heirloom
Begin with something meaningful. It might be a family treasure that has been passed down for generations, or something you hope will become an heirloom in the years to come.
2. Tell Its Story
Use the cover and story pages to record what you know. Include names, dates, places, family traditions, and the little details that might otherwise be forgotten.
3. Write to the Next Keeper
Imagine the person who will one day receive your heirloom. What would you want them to know? What memories would you want them to carry forward? What would you want to tell them about the person who treasured it before them?
Write from the heart. Your words do not need to be perfect. They simply need to be yours.
4. Attach the Archival Tag
Complete the experience by attaching the coordinating archival tag to your heirloom, creating a meaningful connection between the object and its written story.
5. Preserve and Pass It Along
Keep the completed pages safely with your family records or alongside the heirloom. When the time comes, pass the heirloom and its story to the next keeper.
The story continues.
A Keepsake for Every Generation
Imagine a granddaughter opening a box and discovering her grandmother’s lace shawl.
Alongside it is a little archival tag, a story written in her grandmother’s own words, and a letter addressed to the next Keeper of the Heirloom.
She learns that the shawl was worn on a special day. She discovers a family memory she had never heard before. And she reads a letter that was written especially for her.
Suddenly, the shawl is more than a beautiful piece of lace.
It is a connection.
A reminder.
A piece of family history she can hold in her hands.
That is the beauty of preserving an heirloom’s story.
Beautifully Kept in the For You, For Now, For Always Box
The Seven Heirloom Letters comes nestled inside our keepsake For You, For Now, For Always Box, complete with instructions to guide you through the experience.
Thoughtfully designed to make the process approachable and meaningful, the collection brings together the pages, archival tag, and guidance you need to begin preserving the stories behind your family treasures.
It is a lovely place to begin your own family archive—and a meaningful gift for someone who treasures family history.
Begin with One Heirloom
You do not need to document your entire family history in one afternoon.
Begin with one object.
Ask a parent or grandparent about something they have kept for years. Invite a loved one to share the story behind a treasured possession. Write down the details while they are still remembered.
And if you are the one who has been keeping the heirloom, take a little time to tell its story yourself.
One day, someone may be very glad you did.
Because the most precious heirlooms are not always the most valuable things we own.
Sometimes they are the things that help us remember who we are, where we came from, and the people who loved us along the way.
And the letters we leave behind?
Those are the real heirlooms.
